Mr Gary Wolstenholme MBE

Gary Wolstenholme MBEGary Wolstenholme was born in 1960 and lived in the Morecambe Bay area joining Silverdale Golf Club in 1978 as a 23 handicapper. By the time he was 23 he was a scratch player. In 1988 he played for England for the first time. He now has 199 international caps and has played in his 6th successive Walker Cup squad for Great Britain. He won the Amateur Championship for the first time in 1991 and again at Royal Troon in 2003. He beat Tiger Woods in a Walker Cup singles match in 1995. A personal highlight for him was winning the World Team Championship in Chile by scoring a 67 to ensure that Great Britain & Ireland won by a couple of shots from Australia and USA. He was awarded his MBE in 2007 New Year’s Honours List for ’services to sport’.

Gary’s latest accolade is to receive an inscribed silver salver from the EGU President Richard Palmer to recognise his milestone of 200 matches for his country.  He played a significant part in England’s current win against Spain in the European Team Championship played at Royal Ashdown Forest.

He is a past Patron of Silverdale Golf Club. However we were very pleased to see him actively involved in the Centenary Year Celebrations. He has played at the club several times both in the winter and in 2006 Corporated Day where he joined a team from The Westmorland Gazette and shot a net two under par!!. Long may he be associated with Silverdale Golf Club.

The photos show Gary joining members for a damp day of winter golf, a perfect putt for a birdie on the first hole and discussions with partner on the 11th green.
