If one hole has to be chosed as Silverdale’s ‘feature or ’signature’ hole, it must be the hole 13, now known as ‘The Plateau’, but formerly more imaginatively labelled by some ‘The Pulpit’. It is indeed different and achieved a certain national reputation in 2003, when it was included in Britain’s 100 Extraordinary Golf Holes (edited by Geoff Harvey and Vanessa Strowger, Aesculus Press). ‘We were looking for holes where, at some point along the route from the tee, the player would stare in amazement at the scene that greeted him.’ The Plateau was classified, by a panel of golfers of differing abilities who independently reviewed and ranked the holes chosen, as the 24th most extraordinary.
