Silverdale’s Fab Four Swing, Sweat, and Smash 72 Holes in Record Time

The time was 03:45am on the Longest Day of the Year, this could only mean one thing - 72 hole challenge time!

For those not familiar, every year charities run an event where teams of golfers endeavour to complete 72 holes of golf in a 24 hour period. In order to fit the rounds in, you need to start at the crack of dawn and aim to finish around 6pm. This year the challenge was taken by Kevan Holden (his 6th time), Kane Cleland (2nd time), Matty Harbinson and Gareth Lynch - both attempting the challenge for the first time.

Teeing off on the first round at 04:15 (picture on the first tee below) the boys flew round the first 18 in little over 2 hours 15 minutes. This included a quick photo stop next to "Crowthers Wall" to wish Graeme Crowther a very happy 50th Birthday. 36 holes were completed by 9am. By this time the weather had started to warm up making the challenge even harder and hotter! Undeterred, the "Silverdale 72-ers" set off for the final 18 at 12:30 and were through the challenge by 15:30 - 2 hours ahead of the usual pace - well done team!

 First Tee 04:15am

 Happy Birthday Graeme!

Whilst the challenge is fun, there is a serious side to the day. All monies raised so far go towards helping Macmillan Cancer Support. A fantastic charity that does amazing work to support cancer sufferers and their families as well as funding research into curing the disease. So far the team have raised / had pledges to just over £1400 which is phenomenal. If you would like to contribute it is not too late and I am sure the team would appreciate any donation no matter the size. There were some fantastic donations on the course today, including from a visiting party who first of all accommodated and supported the team on their way round, but then at the end presented the lads with a cash donation of £80 - absolutely brilliant.

 A well earned pint!

Charity Scramble / Chipping & Putting Competitions

To help raise funds for the day, the 72-ers teamed up with Silverdales Lady Captain to run a charity 3 person scramble. The proceeds of the competition are split equally between The Golf Foundation and Macmillian. In total 42 golfers took part with £165 being gifted to both charities.

Winning Scramble Team: Andrew Schofield, Anthony Leonard, Stephen Horsfall - Nett 57 (ACPO - Last 6 Holes) - £20 voucher each

Second place: John Mason, Liam Williams, Shaun Foreman Nett 57 - £10 voucher each

In addition to the scramble a fun chipping and putting competition was held with the winners being Father and Son duo of James and Logan Cullen.

A huge thank you to all that supported today - including Mr Captain and David & Edwina and to those who came down to cheer the lads on.

Well done Kev, Matty, Gruff and Kane!
